Name Game

Robyn: What's in a name? *grins*

Angie: We've collected some information on the meanings and origins of the Marauders' names and a couple people close to them.

Sirius - The name of a bright star in the constellation Canis Major, derived via Latin from Greek seirios "burning". Sirius is also known as the 'dog star'.

Remus - In Roman legend Romulus and Remus were the founders of Rome. Remus was later slain by Romulus.

Lupin - Lupus is 'wolf' in Latin.

James - English form of the Late Latin Jacomus which was derived from Iakobos, the New Testament Greek form of Ya'aqov (Jacob). It means "supplanter."

Peter - Derived from Greek petros meaning "stone".

Lily - Simply means "lily" from the name of the flower, a symbol of purity. The word is ultimately derived from Latin lilium.

Severus - Severus was the name of several ancient Roman emperors and later, early saints. Severus is the Latin word for "strict" or "severe."

Snape - This is apparently the name of a town in England, but it's also a term in shipbuilding. It means to bevel the end of a piece of wood, or cut it at a sloping angle, so it fits against an inclined surface.
