Tales > Is it Lily's Birthday?

It was another beautiful morning at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. James Potter slept in his bed, all snuggled in, when fellow Gryffindor Sirius Black came running in, shaking him awake.

"Hey Prongs! Wake up!" he yelled, as James slowly stirred.

"What Padfoot? You better have a good reason for waking me up this early in the morning." James said, as he reached for his glasses. He started to rub the sleep out of his brown eyes, and looked up at the raven haired boy.

"We did something really wrong!" Sirius said, as James quickly sat up.

"What? Did we forget a test or something?" he asked, as he pulled back the sheets, and moved out of bed, finaly putting his glasses on. James seemed quite worried, as he pushed down the strands of black that he called hair.

"No! It's worse!" Sirius said, as he walked back out the door to wake up Remus. James wondered what could be so bad that he would have to get up early in the morning. "Wake up Moony!" Sirius said, as Remus Lupin fell out of bed. Rubbing the sleep out of his amber eyes, Remus looked up at his fellow Gryffindor.

"What now Padfoot?" Remus asked, trying to slick back his light brown hair.

"Guys, we forgot Lil's birthday!" Sirius yelled out softly, trying not to wake anyone else up. Both Remus and James looked at each other, slack jawed and wide eyed.

"How could we forget Lily's birthday?" James asked, as Remus looked at him.

"Especialy you. You're her boyfriend," he said shortly, not being a morning person. James just blushed a bit.

"Well, what should we do guys?" Sirius asked, as he looked at his two friends.

"Maybe we should bake a cake?" James suggested.

"Can you cook Prongs?" Sirius asked.

"No. But what's so hard about baking a cake?" James asked.

"At least he won't set the school on fire like you would Padfoot," Remus said.

"Now. Would I do that?" Sirius asked, as both James and Remus looked at each other.

"Yes!" they both yelled out at the same time.

"Wow. That hurts guys," Sirius said feigning a hurt expression, as all three boys figured it was time for breakfast.

At breakfast, the three friends talked about what to do for Lily's birthday, figuring that a cake would be the best idea.

"I'll try my hand at it," James said.

"Try what?" A redhaired girl asked, sitting down next to James.

"Um, just this experiment that Padfoot and Moony want to try," James said, as Lily looked at him with bright green eyes.

"You three are up to something aren't you?" she asked, as all three boys shook their heads.

"Now Lils, would we be up to something?" Sirius asked.

"You really want me to answer that?" Lilly asked.

Remus started shaking his head, while James just stayed silent.

"If you to get James into any type of trouble, or get him hurt..." Lily said, as she stood up.

"We would never do that Lils. Honest," Sirius said, as both him and Remus backed up a bit.

"Good," Lily said, and sat back down.

Later on that day, James, Remus and Sirius roamed around in the kitchen, trying to figure out what kind of cake to make.

"I say Angel's food cake," James suggested.

"Nah, Devil's Food," Remus said, as Sirius just stayed silent. "Uh oh. Padfoot's silent." This even got James a bit worried.

"What?" Sirius asked, as both Remus and James backed up.

"What have you got up your sleeve?" James asked, eyeing his friend warily.

"Oh nothing. Just this," Sirius said, pulling out a paper.

"What is it?" Remus asked, moving closer slowly.

"It's a recipe," Sirius said simply, as both James and Remus looked it over.

"Seems simple enough," Remus said, James nodding in agreement. Bringing out his wand, he said, "Alright, let's try it."

"Just say the words," Sirius said, and without his two friends noticing, he ducked out of sight.

"Ok... Cakeus Bakeus," Remus said, as he and James watched as a cake magically appeared. It was one layer, chocolate, with little rose confections.

"Wow. It worked," James said, surprised. Remus was glancing around to congratulate Sirius for finding a spell that actually worked when he noticed their fellow prankster had vanished.

"Where's Padfoot?" he asked.

"Um, forget Sirius. Something's wrong with this cake..." James said, and started to back up.

"What?" Remus asked, and turned around. "Oh my..." The cake was slowly growing larger, and larger, and larger, until....

"It's going to explode!" James yelled out, but it was too late. Soon, bits of chocolate and cake flew all over the place, not to mention covering both James and Remus.

"What's going on here?" Lily asked, as she tried to lightly step through the chocolate mess.

"Hey Lils," Remus said, as James waved meekly.

"Um, we're sorry. We tried to bake a cake for your birthday, and..." James started to say, as Lily stopped him.

"Wait. You baked a cake for my birthday?" She asked, dipping her finger into some chocolate that was on James's face. "Yum. I hope you two do know that today ISN'T my birthday?" Lily asked, as all three heard muffled laughing.

Popping up from behind a kitchen counter, Sirius covered his mouth, while looking at his friends.

"Man. You guys fell hook, line and sinker for that one," he said, and laughed again.

Lily, James and Remus looked at each other, before turning to look at Sirius.

"Hey Sirius..." Remus said.

"Yeah?" he replied.

"Run," Lily finished, the three of them advancing on him. Sirius spun around and booked it out the door, Lily, James and Remus close behind him, chasing the prankster throughout Hogwarts.

And with that, my story ends, with another intresting morning at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
